Finally Coming Back w/ a Post

Its been some time that I have written a post in this blog, but finally I decided to do some posting in this blog. Recently its really been quite busy for me in real life, hospital stuff and other stuff. Aside from the recent busy trend, I always take a glimpse at the street sights which I usually observed when I travel from the house to the hospital and vice versa. Its usually a great scenic view but sometimes I m distracted with sights of garbage being littered around.

Since the dawn of industrialization, garbage have mounted to increasing amounts which have left our precious world polluted. With this problem, waste management has been a top priority to minimize waste and garbage from growing. Different schemes have been invented and implemented to address this growing threat. Countries around the Philippines are also showing off with how they manage this ecological threat. Waste management Sydney have shown a great way in dealing with waste, making it up ahead in dealing and controlling waste and garbage. Hopefully in the near future, the garbage and waste that I usually see along the road will be cleared and won't ever cross my eyes again.

Thoughts On The Current Middle East War

The current headlines both domestic and international are all about the current war going on at the Gaza Strip. The war started with Israel aiming to disarm Hamas which takes refuge at the Gaza Strip. Couple of days ago, the war started with air strikes into key locations in Gaza, after a few more days the ground offensive started and up to now hundreds of dead people are found both soldiers and civilians alike. Aside from the casualties, thousands of injuries are also noted and the city is torn apart by broken buildings and debris. Thousands of demonstrators across the globe have also started protesting

Israel went into war because Hamas fired rockets into them causing damages in their territory. For me, hopefully the war would end soon and hopefully Israel's terms are met and Hamas would stop firing rockets at them. Ending the war early would end the number of casualties and injuries. Nobody wants war and there are no winners when a war ends, it would all be anguish and pain. The international community are looking into this matter and trying to end this as soon as possible. Terms should be proposed for them to meet halfway and end the war immediately. Its a start of a new year, and no one wants bitterness at the start of a new year. End the war and let peace take its placed.

New Year Resolutions

With the coming of every New Year, also comes different New Year Resolutions from the different personalities and even the different people around you. Each individual has a certain goal for the New Year, something different from last year's, something to improve on or something to remove from one's system. But for me I ve never tried to make any New Year resolutions becasue I know for one thing I can only keep it up for a couple of months then the resolution will be forgotten usually mid year.

New Year resolutions are ok, something to look forward through the year but its really hard maintaining one. For me, a positive outlook in life on a day to day basis is better compared to one resolution for the whole year. Every day activities differ from one another, so your resolution may work now but won't tomorrow. If you handle things independently, on a day to day basis, you can at least meet your goals everyday. Having a New Years resolution is not bad but a unique resolution for each day is more attainable. So which resolutions have you set for this year.

Crab For Lunch

After a grueling time at the hospital, I grabbed my bag and headed home with my eyes half opened. I was asleep at the bus on my way home lucky enough that I woke were my stopped was supposed to be. Before going home, I bought a dozen doughnuts for my father because he celebrated his birthday yesterday. So after a few meters walk, I was finally home and just in time for lunch. Both of my parents are just starting to have lunch so I hurry up and joined and my stomach started to smile as I saw what lunch was.

We had CRAB for lunch something for my dad's birthday and it was really smells good and tasted good as well. My mother cooked it using her own recipe, I don't know how she did it, what ingredients were used but I was happy and enjoyed lunch after the Christmas season. So I focused myself on the crab's giant pincers, after breaking some nasty shell, the meat was really good. After having a heavy lunch, I had the doughnuts I bought for dessert. All in all plus a glass of ice called soda really made my tired body feel at ease.

Although crabs are generally delicious, I still need to control my appetite when eating them because they are notorious in elevating one's cholesterol and blood pressure. Inspite of this health warning, its was still delicious to indulge in some more crab meat, more than the usual.

Late Holiday Gifts

The Holiday Seasons are over but that didn't stopped me from buying presents for someone special. That someone special is no other than me. Haven't had the time to go to the malls during the actual holiday season due to my hospital rotation. But the other day, I had some free time and pulled myself to go to a nearby mall. So I grabbed myself some money and went to the mall while time permits me.

My current cellphone, is already two years with me so I decided that its about time to give it some change. So I roamed around the mall looking for a cellphone which would fit me because I m not currently updated with the latest cellphone models. So after around 1 hour of roaming around the mall and some cellphone searching, I finally decided to buy a cellphone of the same brand but a newer model and as of now I m currently happy with my choice.

Even though the holiday season is over its never to late to pamper yourself with some gifts. Hopefully the next holiday season I would be able to buy gifts on time and give them on the time.

New Year Celebrations and Injuries

Every first morning of every new year I make it a habit to always turn on the TV and tune in to the morning news to see the different injuries that happened, usually due to firecrackers, during the new year's eve celebration. Aside from the injuries I also checked the different fireworks display of the different countries as they welcome the new year with a bang.

So this morning was no different, the news featured the different celebrations among the different places here in the Philippines and also new year celebrations held in different countries in the world. New Zealand was first featured because I think it was the first country to reach 2009. Countries from the other continents were also featured. All I can say is that they really love their fireworks. All of them featured a special fireworks display as the end of 2008 and the start of 2009 was welcomed. Aside from the fireworks, crowds were also noted as they say "Welcome 2009"

After the fireworks presentation, the exciting part of the news came. Updates from the different hospitals in the Metro where being flashed and shots of firework victims are beings shown. I still get to scratched my head, every year victims just don't learn, they really want their fingers lessen and suffer during a night of celebration. But according to the statistics, firework injuries this year and also gunshot injuries have lessen compared to last year's celebration. At least were going somewhere positive. Hopefully next year I wouldn't be bloody as this year, and hopefully we could find alternatives in making noises in welcoming the new year.

Happy New Year Everyone

Just a few hours more and we are already celebrating the birth of a new year here in our country. One of the exciting scenes here in the new year are the injuries cause by fire crackers which are being featured on the TV news. As of now, some early patients are already visiting the nearest hospitals to get their stitches and some for their fingers to be cut off.

Aside from the fire works excitement, one of the highlight of every new year celebration is the food being prepared by every family. As of now I just have finished dinner and I m still planning to eat a little bit more this midnight. I better eat now coz I m planning to trim down on my diet this coming 2009. Food is great but still we have to bear in mind that overeating is also not good for ourselves.

Another thing that happens every 12 mn of January 1 is the noise being generated by the whole neighborhood. Aside from the fireworks, the "torotots", we also have the "calderos" and vehicle horns which could add the noise believe to drive out evil spirits for the coming year.

Finally every year lots of predictions are being made. These predictions are usually focused on important people on the different aspects of their lives. As for me, I really don't believe in predictions, for now lets just all celebrate a very very happy new year and hopefully this will be a good start for everyone of us. May you all have a happy and prosperous New Year.

Post Christmas Greeting

Haven't written a Christmas post last Christmas day, quite busy in real life (hospital duties)But remembering Christmas 2 days after is not that bad. Christmas is the time of the year wherein all the people for me are happy and in a good mood. Its the season for giving and at the same time for making up among enemies. Aside from the happy faces, roads and street are well decorated with lights and with Christmas decors and this doesn't only happen in one town, province or country but happens all throughout the word. The day the world remembers the Christ was born among us which is the true meaning of Christmas.

The real essence of Christmas is not just the gift givings, eating and drinking spree, great gatherings but it is the time when Jesus Christ was born. Without him coming into this world, Christmas won't be celebrated. So this Christmas season, lets not just go hunt for gifts, eat and drink enormous loads. visit the hippiest Christmas parties but let us remember the true essence of Christmas and lets share His love among our follow men. The Philippine Parol

In the Philippines when the holiday season comes, one would usually see the parol in every street and home here in the country. The parol is a Christmas lantern made locally in the Philippines. It is the most common Christmas decor among small houses, big houses, establishments and even in streets.

The parol is easily made, one can use a couple a small bamboo sticks with a piece of plastic and you can make an elegant parol. If I remembered right, I made a couple of parols during my grade school years. The parol differs in color depending on the mood of the maker, which for him/her describes best the season of Christmas. Aside from the color, the parol also differs in different sizes, from the sizes that fit your palm to giant sizes place on giant Christmas trees and on tall buildings.

The shape of the parol is base and inspired by the nativity cross which appeared on the very first Christmas. Filipinos also believe that the parol brings hope and goodwill during the Christmas season. Philippine Wonders

Today, I came across a 2009 calendar which features different Philippine wonders. Its front page features 12 wonders found all around the Philippines and below is a round down with a brief description of the 12 wonders featured in the said calendar.

Baguio City

This city is located in northern Luzon and is approximately 250 kilometers from Manila. Baguio City is also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines and is the most frequented destination in Northern Luzon.

Underground River, Palawan City

A world heritage site inscribe by UNESCO, it features an 8.2 kilometer navigable underground river. The river flows within a deep cavern under rugged limestone and marble cliffs which are the special features of this underground wonder. Stalactite pillars and rock formations are also outstanding features of the park.

Banaue Rice Terraces

Dubbed as one of the eight wonders of the world, the rice terraces start from the base of the mountain range and reach up to several thousands feet high. The rice terraces made 2000 years ago manifests the engineering skill and ingenuity of the sturdy Ifugaos. It was inscribed in the UNESCO Heritage List as a continuing cultural landscape in 1995.

Boracay Island

Located at the northwestern tip of Panay, this small island has meanwhile has become the number 1 tourist destination of the Philippines. The best part of the island is its 4km "White Beach" and some experienced travelers claim it to be the finest beach in all of Asia.

Callao Cave in Penablanca, Cagayan

This is a seven-chambered cave which boast massive limestone and other rock formation and a skylights and a chapel. More than 300 caves dot the area, 75 of which have been documented by the National Museum since 1977.

Camiguin Beach

Its located 7 kilometers from Mambajao proper and is one of the favorite sandy beaches in the island. Native cottages, multi-purpose building and a restaurant are also available.

Chocolate Hills

Located in Bohol, it is the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol. Among the 1,776 perfectly cone-shaped hills which abound in Central Bohol, two of the hills have been developed into a resort. On top of the hill is a complex that offers accommodation, conference rooms, restaurant and a view deck

Hundred Islands

It is located in the province of Pangasinan in northern Philippines. The islands (124 at low tide and 123 at high tide) are scattered along the Lingayen Gulf and cover an area of 18.44 square kilometers. They are believed to be about 2 million years old.

Mayon Volcano

Mayon is an overwhelming and magnificent in its grandeur. The volcano's northern trail exudes the fragrance of forest trees and diverse vegetation and has made a habitat to different unique species.

Mt. Apo

This mountain is the highest point in the Philippines. It is also the home of the most prized Philippine orchid species like the vanda sanderiana and some of the most exotic fruits. and the endangered Philippine Eagle.

San Juanico Bridge

The longest and the most beautifully designed bridge in the Philippines. It connects Brgy Cabalawan, Tacloban City and Sta Rita town, Samar.

Tubbataha Reef

A marine sanctuary located in the Middle Central Sulu Sea, 98 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Princesa City. Travel by boat from Puerto Princesa is approximately 12 hours to reach this marine sanctuary.

Start of "Misa De Gallo"

Here in the Philippines, it is tradition that prior to Christmas day, Early morning masses or the so called "Misa De Gallo" are held in different churches for 9 consecutive days up to the 24th of December. Today marks the 1st day of the 9 and church goers fill the church early this morning.

Misa De Gallo has started in the Philippines way back to the Spanish colonial days. It was said the this dawn masses were for Filipino farmers during that time. Since then up to the present the "Misa De Gallo" or more locally known as "Simbang Gabi" is held every year in nearly all catholic churches in the whole country.

Aside from the mass itself, the "Misa De Gallo" offers a variety of different food serve outside the church. Usually after the mass, church goes would rush into these this food stalls and have a mouthful of different food varieties. Among the food offered are "Puto Bumbong", "Bibingka", Hot Chocolate and many more.

Even its a hundred years old, the "Misa De Gallo" is still being held up to this day and Filipinos still go to these masses without miss.

ER Christmas Party

Last night, me and some of my co-interns attended the Christmas party of the ER people. It was held in a party place in one of the villages in city. It started early in the night and I think it ended up to the wee hours of the morning.

The party was well represented, from ER consultants, ER residents, nurses, orderlies and even the ambulance drivers were there. The party was well off with food, from a started of shawarma to the main course of lechon (a local delicacy). Ice cream was serve for dessert. After eating through the food courses, beer was serve, and it was given till you drop. Raffle prizes were also given but it has a special twist. If you win a raffle, before you can get your prize, you must drink one loadfull of beer bong and I was proud that I was up for the task, completed it and claim my prize. A presentation was made for the different ER personnel, from the serious to the not so serious. All in all the party was enjoyed and all of us are looking forward to next year's Christmas Party.

Intern's Night Out

Yesterday, the interns in our hospital joined a party session sponsored by a pharmaceutical company for all the interns from different hospitals here in Manila. The event was well prepared and well attended. Interns from all over the metro came in to have a night of enjoyment and relaxation. Freebies were also given.

Upon entering the venue, freebies from the booths were given. Each of us was given a paper bag with some useful things inside. Then at the party area, drinks and cocktails were served. The program showed some performances from celebrities and other dancers and singers. The main event of the evening was the talent competition among the different interns from different hospitals. There were a total of 8 groups all of which gave it a good effort. Unfortunately only was declared a winner

After the event, me and my friends went to a nearby karaoke lounge and did some singing until around 3 in the morning. Upon arriving at home I hit the bed right away, it was a tiring night but it was well enjoyed. How says doctors don't know how to party.

Losing Weight - A Very Hard Task

Currently I m 10 to 15 kilos off my ideal weight and I want to lose that fast, I mean not the fast but I want to lose those extra kilos. Currently I m not on a diet or something, or any food supplements but I have reduced the carbo load that I eat but still I go eating and not starving myself.

For me losing weight and maintaining your ideal weight is one of the hardest task known to mankind. I think its really been a struggle not just for me but for a bunch of million of people out there. Being in the right weight doesn't make you vulnerable to different disease which are associated with increase weight. Imagine not eating your favorite food, that is one hell of a hard job. But being in the right weight has its pros, being healthy makes you more active and you can do more with a right body weight.

So hopefully when the new year starts, I m near my ideal weight, not to mentioned I have to past the Christmas season and avoid all my favorite foods.

Pacman TKO's De La Hoya

Before writing this entry, the fight between the Philippine's Manny Pacquiao and the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya just ended. The match ended in Manny's favor, the fight ended in a TKO at the end of round 8 when De La Hoya decided not to continue. Its another big win not just for Manny but for the whole country and another big celebration is up when the Pacman returns.

Here in the Philippines, whenever Manny Pacquiao fights, the whole country stops, no traffic is noted in the hours of the fight, no crimes are noted, everyone is glued to the radio or to their TV sets. Whenever he wins, I could somehow here the echo of a load cheer from the whole country. And as he beat one of the future hall of famers of boxing, Manny is set to have another hero's welcome when he arrives back here in the country.

For me I consider it an early Christmas gift for the whole nation, as once again the Pacman has unite the whole nation. Congrats the great Manny "The Pacman" Pacquiao

Charter Change In The Cooking

Charter change is a way to change the constitution amend some laws, add some new ones or delete old ones. Charter change is currently again in the air the past few days. People of the lower house (Congress) are currently cooking something for charter change to push through and come to think of it elections are just more than a year away. With this line of thought, most people are thinking that the reason why some people want the constitution to be changed is for a termed extension may it be the president or just officials in the local scene.

Charter change was already cooking I think a year or two ago, but it always didn't push through in the Senate. Currently, people behind the scenes are currently thinking of other ways for the said change to push through. They currently want a constitutional assembly which would joined both the lower and the upper house (Congress and Senate) and then have a vote, in this way they could out vote the Senators.

Makes me wonder sometimes, why at a time of economic crisis would this people want this to push through. They should have at least solve or make solutions to current problems that plagued the country. I think charter change can wait at a more suitable time, maybe after the coming elections when a new president is elected then maybe we can push through with charter change. But as for now, I think most Filipino people need answers and solutions and I think its not found in charter change. Change maybe not in the constitution, but on how policies are run and how changing them could benefit the Filipino people. Change not to push personal interests, but change that would uplift the whole Filipino nation.

Twilight - A Well Enchanted Tail

Prior to reading of this book, months ago, I heard the buzz among my friends that a great movie with be in cinemas at around end of November or early December this year. So I asked what was the story about it was about a love between a frail human and a strong vampire. I just didn't think of the thought to much because it was still months ago.

The past few days, when the trailer is up on every local channel and gossip are currently circulating about the book and the movie, I happened to have the chance of burrowing the 1st book of the series entitled "Twilight". So I started to read the book a few days back and I m shocked up to this time that I m not yet done, I usually finished a book in a day or two. The book is about a girl who came from the big town (Phoenix) and transferred to a small town. The transition led her to meet a boy (not really a boy in terms of age) who she ends up loving. Catch is, he is a vampire not you ordinary boy next door. Actually I m just past three-fourths of the book and hopefully I can finished it by tonight. After the book I ll try to take a look at the movie interpretation of the book. Hopefully it will be as exciting and tense like the book.

Down With Flu

Yesterday, my tour of duty at the hospital wasn't that good, I had fever at the hospital at around 38 to 39 degrees celsius aside from the my nose was flowing with mucus all day long. I really hate it when an annoying cold hits me when I m at the hospital, I think I m to vulnerable to other type of diseases but since I m already at the hospital I decided to finish my tour of duty to lessen my make ups at the end of the year.

I asked my resident if I could rest for a couple of hours at our quarters which I m glad she gave me. Prior to sleeping, I ate dinner and had 2 paracetamols. I eventually ended up sleeping for like 2 - 3 hours. Upon waking up I was still with fever but somehow I m much better. I did my hospital rounds and eventually ended up sleeping again around 3 in the morning. Hopefully my next duty on Tuesday I would be devoid of fever or a nasty irritating cold.

Wedding Anniversary

Wedding anniversaries are great events that are worth to be treasured and to be remembered for the rest of your life. My parents celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary 2 days ago and I greeted them both early in the morning as I was still awake.

They were married back in November 26, 1981 and after a year I was born in the month of December. Each anniversary offered new feats as well as new challenges. Early anniversaries were more on taking care of us because we were still babies, me and my brother. As we grow up, each anniversary changed in celebration and in problems. But as a whole I m really proud of both of them for reaching a great feat and wishing them to have more to come.

The day was quitely celebrated among us family members (4 of us) by simply cooking a bunch of Filipino dishes. As early as now, I m looking forward to their anniversary next year and hopefully I could be the earliest greater next year as I was this year.

A Balikbayan Friend Arrive

A classmate of mine from my Medicine Batch of 2008 arrived this morning from the United States. When we graduated last March, he directly flew to the United States to take the USMLE their. Actually it was a surprised visit and we didn't expect him to be hear at the hospital today.

Me and some of my other co-interns were on are way to have lunch at a "Sinangag" store in front of the hospital when someone surprised us from the back. Low and behold it was our friend fresh from the US. Then we shared lunch together with his older sister at a nearby food store. Memories and experiences were shared, things here and abroad were mentioned. It was a fun filled lunch but it was cut short because its already 1:30 in the afternoon and we have to be back at our posts. We are planning to have a welcome back celebration this coming weekend. Hopefully it will be filled with cheers and laughter. Even though we haven't seen each other for about 6 months its always great to see a good old friend around.

A Day At The Funeral

3 days ago, one of my mentors in the field of orthopedics died due to a car accident. It happen early morning in one of the fly overs along Roxas Boulevard. He was eventually brought to the nearest hospital but he eventually expired. I was still at the hospital at that time when the news broked out and we were all in shocked not expecting the accident to happen. He was a great guy and a good teacher.

I visited the funeral two days ago joined by surgery residents in the hospital. The funeral placed was full of people mostly from the medical field. A mass was given in memory of the beloved doctor and messages by families and friends were said. Most of the talked centered on how the accident happen and some were still in shocked that the accident happened. He is scheduled to be cremated.

On my way home, I told myself "Live life to fullest and make the most of everyday"

A Coup In The Philippine Senate

After my duty status yesterday and after heaving breakfast, I chanced upon the front page of a local newspaper and it said the a coup happened at the Philippine Senate yesterday ousting now former Senate President Manny Villar. The new senate president is Former Secretary of Defense Juan Enrile. This somehow gave me quite of a shock not expecting this to happened amidst the different controvesies currently being handled by the senate.

After reading through the story, the C-5 controversy (a road here in the Philippines) which placed Senator Villar in hot water paved the way for his removal from the top post. On my part, I didn't expect something like this to happen in the senate. Things could get rough in the senate in the coming few days and who knows maybe it would even turned uglier becuase of this row. Inspite of the different problems facing the country right now, still an unexpected and not supposed to happen event happened. Hopefully the senate will back in order as soon as possible so they will be back to doing their jobs instead of just promoting their personal interests.

Another Rollback

Another roll back on the oil prices was experienced by the Philippines a couple of days ago. The current diesel price ranges from around 38 to 39 pesos while gasoline ranges from 41 to 42 pesos. This is really getting in handy especially that the Christmas season is fast approaching. Savings from oil products would lead to more budget for other essential products like food or medicines. Aside from that Christmas gifts may now be bought at a bigger budget due to the rollback.

Aside from the rollback on oil prices, a rollback on LPG tanks were also seen. If I remember it right it was around 10 to 11 pesos per kilogram of LPG tank. Aside from these, rollback from of public utility fares were also done. Speaking of savings, this timing sure does come in handy specially now when the world is experiencing a global economic crisis.

Current Senate Probe on JokJok Bolante

Hitting the headlines this past few days is the arrival of former agriculture under secretary Jok Jok Bolante. He was returned here from the United States to face an inquiry regarding the fertilizer fund scam which cause a big 728 million peso mess. After arrival here a few days back, he was rushed to St. Luke's Medical Center for certain health issues but for me I guess he was just trying to escape or prolong the scheduled senate inquiry into the fund scam.

Today, he was brought to the Senate from the hospital for some questioning and answering regarding the anomalous fund. It was broadcasted live so all the Filipino may watch and be a judged on their own if he is telling the truth or merely spitting out lies in front of the Senators. A lot of anomalies now cloud my dear country and I see no end to any of it. Cases are filed left and right but nothing gets resolved and no one even gets convicted. People in power tend to manipulate the justice system to clear their mysterious names. When will this end, when will someone be brave enough to stand and speak the truth amidst the pressure and life threats. Hopefully someday, hopefully soon.

There is still hope for the Filipino people, as long as someone still believes in the truth, justice will make its way maybe not now, maybe in the coming days. The Philippines would have been more industrious if were not plagued by any of this anomalous scams or even anomalous people in power.

3 Hours Sleep

Yesterday was another duty day for me, we had a quite a fuzz at the ER then everything eventually quite down as we reached midnight. Did a couple of paper works especially the patient census for our tour of duty. Visited some patients and asked some complaints that they might have. Headed to dreamland at around 3 o clock in the morning and I was buzzed by a nurse because I have to insert a line for a patient scheduled for surgery at noon. She was to undergo blood transfusion prior to his operation.

All in all, I only have a total of 3 hours of sleep up to now that I am writing this entry. On my way home, my eyes were really heavy and it really gave me a hard time to keep them up. After playing a couple of computer games (DOTA)I am somewhat rejuvenated a little, but I know the sense of sleepiness will visit me again a little bit later. I wondered how my hours of sleep is necessary to keep you fit. We all know that 8 hours of sleep is the recommended hours of sleeping to keep you energize for tomorrows activities. But for someone like me who stays at the hospital having slept for 3 straight hours devoid of any calls is a luxury. Its better than sleeping 5 or 6 hours but full of interruptions or ward calls. So I guess my sleeping time last night was enough for me to last another day. I just have to make up for the lacked of sleeping hours tonight. Hopefully someday I could experience sleeping for 8 hours while on hospital duty.

Wedding Jitters

Today I just arrived from Nasugbu, Batangas City to attend the wedding of one of my co-interns. Batangas City is one of the provinces located in Southern Luzon. It is a 3 hour ride from the capital. Good for us we didn't get lost on the way to the wedding site.

We just arrived in time at the chapel to witnessed their "I do's" and their kissing each other. The wedding reception was held at the function room near the chapel. I guessed their were around 200 guess who attended the wedding ceremony. The food served was really tasty especially the dessert. A variety of pastries and cakes made the eating really worth while. A short program was done in tribute to the newly wed couples. Messages from friends and relatives were expressed and also a message from the couple was given for the guests.

Another happy thing is, they have their first baby on their way. The bride which is my co-intern is currently 6 months pregnant and we are all expecting her by February. So to the newly weds, Congratulations and Best Wishes, May You Have More Babies To Come.

Sunset: A View That’s Worth a Thousand Words

Have you ever seen a clear and beautiful view of a sunset. Have you ever wondered what are the thoughts of other people viewing the same sunset. It could be the end of a beautiful day or could be the start of a wonderful evening up ahead. Aside from those two, it could be mean other things.

Around 10 years ago, during my high school years, I usually spend time with some of my friends at the seashore after playing basketball to catch a glimpse of the sunset. Sometimes its clearly visible but sometimes the clouds disappoint us. Seeing the sunset somehow removes some of the fatigue from basketball play. Its view makes as smile and make us stand in awe of the wonderful thing happening on the horizon in front of us. As the sun fades in the horizon, we set ourselves home, filled with some revitalize energy.

Whatever one thinks when viewing a sunset, may it be positive or may it be negative, the Sunset view is something we could be proud off and something we could share and tell stories about to the upcoming generations.

The US elections: A clean guide for the upcoming Philippine Elections

The US elections was concluded a day ago and it went in favor of Barrack Obama. Obama is the first black American president in history and it was a landslide election victory. The results were announce after a day or two after the voting started, and its really fast compared how counting of local elections progress. It was fast, cleaned, no anomalies and no election crimes were noted.

Filipinos should looked at the US elections as a guiding light being fast cleaned with no anomalies. I m talking about the way votes are tabulated and counted and not the type of election itself. Locally, election results would usually be pronounced after a month or can even sometimes take longer. Aside from the slow progress, election crimes and anomalies are usually rampant before, during and after elections. Lives are sometimes lost during election times. Elections officials should somehow make a study on how things are done in the US and they in turned can learned from them and be able to apply it locally to be able to create fast and cleaned results.

The Philippine election is coming this 2010, hopefully no suspicious winners are pronounced and hopefully no bloodshed will be produced. Let’s keep it a safe election, one we could be proud off.

Ice Cream?! Anyone?!

Ice cream for me is my favorite dessert and could sometimes replace my main meal if it’s a loadful. Cakes and chocolates just come in second. During my childhood, whenever we go at the supermarket I always tried to persuade my mom to buy me ice cream and usually I go for a gallon or if not a half gallon. Aside from its cold taste it usually gets the exact flavor and usually one craves for more after eating a cup.

On ordinary days, especially in the afternoon when the sun starts to burn your day, there is always a rolling ice cream store (we call it a Sorbetero here in the Philippines) who roams around from one place to another. I usually get 2 cups for the price of 10 pesos but sometimes I could go for 3 cups when the sun really strikes hot. The “Mamang Sorbetero” usually offers assorted flavors ranging from mango, chocolate, cheese or ube.

Speaking of flavors, for me any flavor will do but I have with outmost joy to announce that my favorite is the flavor “Rocky Road”. Aside from the great chocolate taste, the marshmallows and nuts usually taste really great in your tongue. After writing this entry I think ill go grab my self some ice cream I m actually craving right now. So ice cream?! Anyone?!

US Elections, a day away

A day before the US elections, the whole world should be really hype, who would win, who would lead the superpower nation in the next 4 years. Jitters among supporters maybe really in a high. But I wonder who would really win.

Checking the local papers this morning, it shows Obama leading. But would the pre elections stats be the same after the election, who knows. I wonder if the 2 presidential candidates could even sleep at night during this time, or even worse could they even take a decent meal without thinking about that eventful day that would bring them to the top of the greatest superpower country of this time. For me, I m not cheering for anyone, as long as the soon to be new president could have great reforms and foreign policies especially for developing countries. Whoever wins hopefully brings the ailing economy into the balance again and be a good example for his fellow country men and also to the people of the world.

As for now, all I have to do now is wait hopefully the best canditate wins. So to all US citizens, vote wisely.

A Giant Rollback

On Today's local newspapers, headlines read of a giant rollback among the oil companies both the big players and the small players. Oil Companies rolled back as high as 6 pesos on diesel products and up to 2 pesos and 50 cents amont gasoline products. This for me is a giant blessing for the country, amid the looming economic crisis experience by the world at least we have something to smile about here in the country.

With this rollback, fare prices could eventually be cut down and at the same time other commodities may follow to cut down their prices. Other than these, we wont anymore see any strikes among jeepney operators and drivers which could somethimes cause chaos in the streets. With this in hand, hopefully other parts of the economy could also make a comeback a surge upwards to strengthen the peso and make it strong in the global market.

After reading this news, I remembered during my childhood days that gas at the time was around 8 to 10 pesos per liter and it made me laugh. I wondered and hope that somehow a very big rollback could make current oil prices back to those former prices. But that was just a line of thought, still I m glad oil prices are going in a downward trend.

My Fave FootBall Team Failed to Win

Since years ago, even though I m in the Philippines where in the number one sport is basketball and football doesn't have a great following, I enjoy watching football games on TV especially if the team involved is Manchester United. I remembered seeing them in 1999 when they won the UEFA Champions League and saw them last year won it again. Aside from that they are also strong contenders in the local scene, being the defending champion of the English Premiere League. Last year was a big blessing for the club when they both won in England and in Europe.

For this year, Manchester United did not have a good start, losing to Liverpool early and is currently not in the Top 4 of the Premiere League standings. Last weekend, they met up with Everton, they needed a win to increase their chances of cathching up with the current league leaders. Unfortunately, after leading in the first half by a goal, they were caught by their opponents and held them to a 1-1 draw. They only got 1 point insted of the 3 points that they need. Currently they are at 6th pleace with still a game to play to equal the current leader' games played. Its still in the early part of the league, hopefully after a couple of games, they can catch up and hopefully defend the title for this year. On the other hand Manchester United is currently doing good on the Champions League, currently leading Group E. I also hoped that they can also defend their throphy here. Go Go Manchester United

Halloween - Up Ahead

As the eve of October 1 approaches, Halloween is again in the air. Kids now may be upbeat and excited about the coming festivities especially the trick or treat part wherein they get lots of goodies. Aside from that, houses are also decorated for the said event. But when did Halloween started.

History dates back around 2000 years ago among the Celts living in what is now Ireland. During their time, November 1 was celebrated as their new year. They believe that on the eve of October 31, the ghosts of the dead return to the earth and the worlds between the living and the dead becomes blurred. That might explain why Halloween is associated with scary and spooky decorations and costumes. Since it was used to be new year, that's the reason maybe people now a days have lots of festivities when November 1 comes.

In my country, November 1 is usually spend by visiting the graves of loved ones and relatives in the cemetery and a candle is usually lit among the gates of houses to commemorate the dead. But during the recent years, Halloween here has somewhat became Westernized, trick or treat now is also being practiced and parties are seen to commemorate Halloween. The other day at the hospital, I saw kids line up, dressed up in Halloween costumes with their mini bags going inside the hospital for trick or treat. I told myself that as early as now, the celebration already started and those kids are really hyped. Hopefully this coming Halloween everbody will enjoy instead of being frightened.

Fast Times, Fast Food

During my duties at the hospital, there are times that get to busy tending to calls and roaming around the hospital that sometimes I forget to eat my meals. Sometimes I would be surprised when I looked at my watch thinking its still around 7 or 8 pm but actually its nearing 11 pm. Some patients would sometimes show up at lunch thus bumping my lunch time quite late in the afternoon.

So when times get though, I usually spend some few minutes to sneak out of the hospital and grab a bite at the nearby fast food store. Sometimes I would go to Mcdonalds, to grab a sandwich meal and eat it around 15 minutes then I ll be headed back to the hospital. There are times, I would change fast food stores, either I ll go to Chowking to grab myself hot noodles or I ll cross the street to dine at KFC. Whichever fastfood I go, I make it a point that I eat my food fast so I can go back to the hospital as soon as possible. Sometimes, I have the pleasure of time, sitting back, relaxing and enjoying my meal but that sometimes could be rare.

For fast times, one can go grab a cool meal at a nearby fast food store, to boost and replenish your energy. Hopefully other fast food stores will be built nearby the hospital so I have more variety.... HEHEHE

A Quick Look at the Current Financial Crisis

Recently all news from here and abroad all focus on the ailing economy not just of developed countries but that of the world. What affects the economy of the United States affects the world.

Early this year, it started when oil prices where skyrocketing, prices doubled as I can remember. In my country, transport strikes where hurled from left to right, all complaining to the governement why oil prices cannot be controlled. The Filipino people tooked its toll when the transport groups made an increased in its normal transport fare. Inspite of the rallies and protests, oil prices continue to go up. Then midyear the oil prices started to go down. A downward trend was noted on the local scene when oil companies started to implement price rollbacks almost every week which made drivers and transport unions smile. Although still not at a low price, still the trend was it going down.

After surviving the oil dilemma, another crisis hit the world. News came out from the United States that some of their big banks/companies where going banckrupt. After this alarming news, stock markets started to plunge, it affected every stock market. Locally, rumors came out about some banks going into bankcruptcy. The US president made a move to stop the bleeding. Currently the bailout plan was approved, and hopefully this would be enough to stopped the current financial crisis and then the world market could finally bounce back.

Hopefully after this, nothing bigger will arrive and then the world economy would be back on its feet in no time.

Buy 1 Take 1 Hotdog Sandwich

Prior to writing this entry, I had a hotdog sandwich for my afternoon snack. For today I skipped lunch so I m quite hungry. I bought the hotdog sandwich in a nearby store at the street corner. It offers all its products in buy 1 take 1 fashion. Aside from the hotdog sandwiches it also offers hamburgers and cheeseburgers and double cheeseburger. Although the taste is not as good as the ones on fast food chains, its price is affordable and its enough to fill my stomach and keep me going for another few hours. Plus I added an ice cold soda to complement my hotdog sandwiches.

Speaking of sandwich stands, there is a weird one at the hospital, its name is BurDog, so name because it sells burgers and hotdogs but the weird thing is they only sell fishballs, squid balls and the like. Funny thing, their products don't much their store name.

Milk Scare in the Philippines

Recent local news are all eyes on the latest development regarding the results of the Melamine testing on the different milk products coming from China. The tests were made due to the recent milk scare, which says that milk products from China contain the chemical Melamine which is toxic to the kidneys.

Prior to the scare, news came out that some children from China developed Nephrotic Syndrome (a syndrome wherein the kidney are damaged which make them leak protein). Studies done in China noted that the milk the children were drinking contain the chemical Melamine. After hearing this news, local officials made an order to recall all milk products from China and they are to undergo Melamine testing to see if they contain the toxic chemical. From then on, milk products from big supermarkets to small milk stalls were all recalled for testing. The consumers were also advised to return products which they recently bought. A total of more than 20 products underwent testing.

After a couple of days, the initial results came out. Out of the several products screened around 2 to 3 products where noted to be positive for melamine. Other local officials also want to test not just milk products but also other food products coming from China to see if they contain the chemical. As of now, a lot of products are being tested, not just products coming from China but also other products coming from other countries. Hopefully the results will be released soon so consumers will be guided on which products are safe and which can be potentially harmful.

Poverty - a Top Priority

The other night while relaxing at home, I glance upon a documentary done by a local channel. The documentary focused on the growing problem of poverty in the country. The documentary showed one family as an example, the family was composed of 13 members, the father, the mother and 11 were their children. The family resided in an open lot which grew a few bananas at the back of the lot. The documentary showed there routine daily activities, they usually skipped breakfast for no food is available to them and they usually wait for lunch to be served. For lunch, the mother would cut down one banana tree and get its fruits even though its not even ripe. She would usually boil the bananas and would serve them with salt to the kids and that will be lunch for them. After lunch two of the eldest boys would go for a walk and would seek trash to find anything worth selling to the junk shop. After an afternoon's search the boys would usually get a 1 kilo worth of trash which is being sold for around 9 pesos, the money would then be turned over to their mom for dinner. According to the mother, it would be lucky for the family if they could eat twice a day. Then the next day, the whole cycle begins again.

The documentary featured another family, this time the family was composed of around 4 to 5 members leaving near the mountain side. The main food source is the family are the land tubers being unearthed by the father. It was mentioned that the tubers they get are usually poisonous but according to the father if properly cooked could be edible for human consumption. They would usually put it to a boil and serve it to the family.

After seeing the two family examples, it gave me a chilling reality that a majority of my countrymen are really suffering from poverty. Poverty should be on the government's top priority to eradicate. They should allocate money, people, energy and resources in battling the dreaded problem. Those children mentioned could have a bright future ahead of them if not only for poverty, they could become future lawyers, doctors, engineers if not only for poverty. Poverty could cripple a nation's economy, so making poverty a top priority could not only improve the economy but can touch the lives of the less fortunate ones.

Life in the Fast Lane

Life in the fast lane, some like it, some despise it, as for me fast life can come in handy if you don't like your current situation, and you want it to move a little bit fast forward but sometimes you would despise life moving fast if your enjoying the moment with someone special or enjoying the moment with family and friends.

Everyday, my daily routine upon waking up is taking a bath, go to the hospital and go home if I m not on duty, spend some time on the computer and watching TV then go to sleep at around midnight, then the cycle goes again. Usually my sleeping time is usually between 4 to 5 hours, really short if I look back during my college days were I get more sleeping hours. Sometimes its even lucky if I get 4 to 5 hours of sleep, sometimes I only get 3 hours sleep when I m on duty at the hospital. This for me is a fast routine life.

Life can fly so fast that sometimes I fail to notice that the previous month already ended. Sometimes its just tiring to go again and again on your daily life routine. Seeing the some places and sometimes seeing the same people could make you tire sometime. Even eating the same type of food on a daily basis could sometimes make you puke. But even in a fast track life, there are little perks that could still make you smile inspite of the routine situation, something out of the blue could make you grin and probably shout inside "thank God for this day". Life and Time could go forward without you even noticing, but the thing that makes it worth while is you making it count each day and you being a blessing to the people around you. Pleasant Day.

Caught By The Rain

The typhoon I mentioned in my previous post just recently left the country, so the morning started with a good bright sun above the sky. So on my way to the hospital I didn't bring my umbrella with me, thinking it will be a fine sunny day until night time. So after lunch, I was about to go home, but thinking that the sun was still so hot during that time I spend some time at the hospital with some of my friends. Then around 4 in the morning I decided to go home, before riding the bus, I noticed that the bright sun was already covered by some gloomy clouds, I still told myself if it will rain I will be at the house by then. So on my way home, nearing the place were I ll be off the bus, rain started to drop, and its no ordinary light rain, and it was somewhat strong. With no umbrella to cover me, upon going down the bus, I dashed to the nearest pedestrian shade and waited for the rain to stopped. I learned one valuable lesson today, never underestimate the weather, it might be sunny in the morning but it can be different when afternoon or evening comes and never forget to bring the umbrella when you have a gut feeling that it will rain so you wont be soaked in water.

Start of Another Month

Its another month, another start, and I started at a new department. Its already October and December is fast approaching not to mentioned my birthday is nearing its day. I was sleepy the whole day, and I m quite a bit dizzy right now, but I m taking time to write an entry to my blog.

The day started with a rushed, woke up nearly 30 minutes before my log in time. Missed breakfast, rushed to the hospital and I was still in time, the out patient department just opened. Then upon writing the date in a paper, I noted that it is already a new month, I told myself time really thus fly fast.

So what is October all about. The thing I know about October is that its just two months before Christmas and two months before the start of a new year. So I digged in some literature to know the roots of the month October. October was formerly the eight month of the calender. prior to the addition of January and February, then it became the 10th month of the calender. Unfortunately, still digging to read more, my head won't allow me, quite dizzy right now. Anyways any start of the month for me is always a fresh new start, a room for more improvement. Hopefully this year's October is more fruitful than last year's October. So another month and another start.

Another Typhoon

Its currently raining here steadily since this morning. Upon waking up, I already here the sound of raindrops and I m still hearing it until now. Checking the early morning news, at a local channel and at CNN, another typhoon has again hit the country. Its international name is Higos and locally named Pablo. It particularly affected the Visayas region but somehow it made it here in Metro Manila. Good thing is we have a holiday here today and I m having my day off from the hospital.

Speaking of typhoons, I checked out the internet for the typhoons that greatly devastated the Philippines. In my searches I found out that typhoon "Uring", international name Thelma was number 1 in the death toll list. It happen last 1991 around November 2 to 7, leaving a death toll of around 5,101 but the estimate was around 8,000. Some of the victims were still missing and were presumed to be dead. While on the damages list, Typhoon "Ruping" made it to number 1 with an estimated damages of aroun 10 billion pesos. Whew talked about nature control.

There were other typhoons that left a severe impact in my country, hopefully the numbers above wont be broken. Hopefully when a strong typhoon is on its way, we can be more prepared to prevent losses and damages. Wondering when the rain outside will stopped although I missed playing under the rain, for now I don't want it to cause any trouble to my countrymen.

Afternoon Snacks

Before heading home, I asked two of my peers to accompany me at the adjacent street of the hospital. I asked them to have our afternoon merienda(snacks). We headed directly to the chicken balls vendor just a couple of blocks away. I ate around 10 pieces while my two peers I guess also ate the same quantity. While eating, we talked about the things that happen during the day. Afterwhich we grab a bottle of soda to complete our afternoon eat fest. Then I accompanied them back to the hospital, then I headed home. I could still taste the chicken ball sauce up to now :)Next time I ll try another street delicacy, something that will still make me crave hours after eating.

Barong Tagalog

The "Baraong Tagalog", whose picture appears above is the national costume for males in my beloved country. The Barong Tagalog has a long tradition of more than four centuries. The look as well as the meaning of the dress have evolved throughout four centuries. The special traditional features remained untouched; the dress is thin and transparent and has decorations embroidered on it.

During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines (over 300 years from 1561-1889) the barong tagalog was required by the Spanish government for Filipinos (indios) to be worn at most times to show the difference between the rich and the poor. the poor who serve the rich must always be in uniform.

Take their chauffeurs, maids, and employees as examples. They are in uniform to immediately distinguish them from the employers. When the Spaniards colonized the Filipinos, they had to make it abundantly clear who the boss was through the imposition of a dress code. Men were not allowed to tuck their shirttails in. That was the mark of his inferior status.

Second, the cloth material should be transparent so that he could not conceal any weapon that could be used against the masters. Third, as a precaution on thievery, pockets are not allowed on the shirt.

By the turn of the century a new middle class began to emerge among the Filipinos. These were known as the principalia. They have mastered Spanish laws and were able to obtain title to lands. They became successful in business and agriculture and sent their sons to be educated abroad. They were privileged to build their houses in the poblacion around the plaza near the seats of power.

Only a member of the principalia could be addressed by the title DON, and only they were allowed to vote. They had all the trappings of power and status, but for one undeniable fact: they still had to wear their shirttails out, if only to remind them that they were still Indios.

What the Spanish authorities did not smother out was the Filipino's will power and dermination to psychologically conquer their colonial masters, through improvisation and reinterpretation. The Filipino's stylistic bongga (flashy dresser) was a reaction against the overt discrimination and insensitive oppression of the Spaniards.

For example, Filipinos were forbidden to use imported silk and fabrics for their Barong, so they ingeniously used pineapple leaves to weave the pinya jusi cloth of the barong, turning the outfit into such delicate material, of luminous silky rich mixture much finer than silk. And to add insult to injury, they hand- embroidered the front with such exquisite abandon: Calado and hand- work all over.

Palgrave, the ethnographer noted, "The capitan's shirt was the native barong, of fine and delicate fiber, embroidered and frilled; it was light and cool and not tucked in the trousers". (Corpuz, 74)

The Barong Tagalog gained its power, prestige, and status when President Quezon, the first Filipino president, declared it the National dress. The status of the lowly inferior Barong thus became another symbol of Filipinos' resistance to colonization.

After World War II, Philippine presidents began wearing the Barong Tagalog at their installation into office and on every formal state occasion. In contemporary times the Barong Tagalog is the power dress. As an abogado de campanilla, you cannot afford not to wear the Barong Tagalog when arguing a case in Philippine courts.

Today, every visitor and foreign dignitary invited to a Malacanang Palace state function must, by necessity, and dictated by protocol, be dressed to the nines in a Barong Tagalog. The invitations specifically say come in "Barong" instead of the traditional "Coat and Tie".

So from a lowly uniform centuries ago, to the national costume today, there you have the Philippine's Barong Tagalog.

Food from the Mission

Still wanna share the things that happen to me last Saturday, during the medical mission I attended. I want to share the lunch we had after the medical mission ended. It was a well mixed of seafoods and vegetables, most of which I really enjoyed eating.

Here is the Lunch Menu rundown: (pics then description below)

First of the list, is we had skewered catfish, fresh from the grill. It was really tasty due to the fact that it was catch fresh and then immediately went to the grill. It was one tasty meal.

Next is, "Sinigang na Bangus". Its a local cuisine wherein milkfish or locally know as bangus is mixed with different vegetables, cooked with a delicious soup. It was served hot and just seeing it really made my stomach craved.

Then came "Sweet and Sour Tilapia" Tilapia is a fish really popular here in the Philippines. Again you can see the red sauce in smoke, fresh from the stove. Upon tasting it, the sauce which is my favorite in this dish really did appeal to my tongue.

Both okra and eggplant were the vegetables being served to add flavor to the different fish cuisine mentioned above.

There you have it, inspite of the tiring day, my stomach was filled to overflowing after having lunch that day. Looking forward to having another meal like that.

Crazy For Slippers

Yesterday, I was asked to attend a medical mission in one of the towns of Laguna (a province here in the Philippines) We finished early in the mission, then after having lunch, around 1 in the afternoon, we were about the go back to the city, then while in the car, one of my seniors ask the driver if the town of Liliw was on our route. The driver told us that we were headed on the other way, however offered that if we want to go there he can take us there since its too early to go back. So we decided to go.

Liliw is a town in Laguna famous for its Tsinelas(slippers) Festival. We planned to go there to buy some cool footwear. Aside from the different tsinelas, Liliw is also known for tasty native delicacies and some great resorts.

Liliw was founded in 1571. Pretty pretty long ago. It is said the the town got its name from a bird. When we arrived in town, we found a lot of colorful streamers hang in the streets, we thought it was the festival, but unfortunately it wasn't the festival there. A lot of shoe stores are lined up, making it really hard for you to choose which footwear to buy. So we hopped from one store to the other, finding which one caught are eye the most. So while walking the streets and shop hopping I bought a halo-halo (a Philippine desert), something to eat while walking. After an hour of shop searching, we finally bought a couple of great slippers.

After fulfilling are slipper craze, we glanced at the different delicacies being sold on the streets of the town. I bought a couple of chicharon and some polvoron for my peers in the hospital. After two hours of roaming around, we decided to go back before night sets in.

Prison Struggle

Have you ever wondered what was it like inside a prison cell. Have you ever wondered what is life to be an inmate. Have you ever wondered what it feels to be a gang member and at the same time attack and mugged other people who are noted to be below you.

I wanna share with you a cool online MMORPG game that I usually play. One of my friends recommended it to me and I finally started playing and I enjoyed playing it. The game is entitled Prison Struggle. When you register, you will become and inmate and will start from the low ranks. You will gain your way upward by working out in the gym and gain money from mugging other inmates.

The game has a lot of features, you can play casino from a simple dice game to the dreaded russian roullete. You can also be hospitalized when someone attacks you and you are defeated. You could also do more crimes will inside your cell but be warned once your crime attempt fails, the guards will pull you to the showers. But inspite being in the showers, a fellow inmate could free you from the said detention place. You could also hop from one prison yard to another, but some prison yards would require high levels. During your stay, you could buy your weapons and armors from the friendly marketplace. Another feature that I liked is that inspite your inside prison, you could own a piece of land, provided you have a land title in hand. In this land you could plant marijuana and after a week harvest it and sell it for cash. There are still a lot of features available, features that I know you would enjoy.

Lazy Weekend

My saturday was filled with TV shows (as i watched the semifinal matched between Federer and Djokovic in the US open). As I reclined in the couch, eating some finger foods, enjoying the game, I told myself this day is taking to long and I m having a hospital duty the next day. Lazy is the word the fits me that day.

Sunday came, upon waking up tried to get a glimpse of some news on the TV, had breakfast and on my way to the hospital. On my way to the hospital, I take a 10 minute walk to the bus area were I get a ride to the hospital. I was watching the scenery as the bus brooms its way to the hospital. Some birds caught my eye, making me envy of them, they are just there flying, devoid of any worries or problems. As I arrive in the hospital made may duties in the NICU, then had lunch. The afternoon was so so so moving slowly. No pregnant patients were admitted during that time which gave me a great time to enjoy the football game in my cellphone. Night came, made 2 baby catches and then I m off to bed. Watching my other peers review for a presentation today makes me so lazy. Again the word LAZY perfectly fits me even before I m about to take my sleep.

Monday morning, one patient was admitted, informed my senior, then had another nap. Upon waking up, caught a glimpse of my watch and was somehow shocked by the time, it was only 7 in the morning I thought I was sleeping already till 12 noon. The clock's hands are also deemed lazy in moving around. But its the start of the week, spirits should be high and the outlook bright for the whole week. Hopefully next weekend will be an eventful one.

Breakfast - the all important meal

One of my previous posts mentioned what I had for lunch that day, but today breakfast is on the post list. Breakfast as we all know is known as the most important meal of the day. Stacking up calories in the morning is essential for all of your activities the rest of the day. Eating breakfast is more beneficial than skipping it.

Studies have shown the kids eating breakfast have good grades at school compared to kids who skipped there breakfast session. It just does not apply to kids, but it also applies to adults, they perform more in their respective job places when they eat breakfast. When a person abstains from eating breakfast he/she gets easily tired and usually by mid day needs to refuel to give him/her an energy boost. Some research also tells us the eating breakfast has an advantageous effect on late-morning mood, satiety and cognitive performance. Some other researches also tells us that breakfast can keep us thin and in shape. So a lot of pros for breakfast, that's why this morning before heading home, I headed to the hospital canteen and had my delicious and nutritious breakfast.

So when morning comes, are you gonna eat breakfast or abstain from it... Think of the whole day :D

Chocolate 101 - side effects at a glance

To recap this mini series regarding chocolate, I ll end this mini series with the side effects of indulging with so much chocolate. After a glance at its history and benefits lets venture on its possible side effects.

Some chocolate chemicals can give a rise in your blood pressure and blood sugar which could make you feel alert and content for a while but after this effect, the after effect is that you'll feel more tired than before you eated the chocolate. One chocolate substance can mimic marijuana and can give you a "high" effect. And for me the most dreaded possible side effect in one eating or craving for chocolate is that he/she can gain huge amounts of weight. An increased weight can also lead to many co-morbidities, maybe an elevated blood pressure in the future or having the dreaded diabetes.

So for those chocolate afficionados out there, who crave and die just to eat chocolate, here is a brief pros and cons of chocolate. I myself am a lover of chocolate. So eat chocolate with caution and avoid over eating. If you can handle the cons then go ahead and indulge yourself. So there you have it a mini series of chocolates history, benefits and possible side effects. With sweetness comes great responsibilities *wink*

Cacao, the source of chocolate, contains antibacterial agents that fight tooth decay. Of course, this is counteracted by the high sugar content of milk chocolate.

The smell of chocolate may increase theta brain waves, resulting in relaxation.

Chocolate contains phenyl ethylamine, a mild mood elevator.

The cocoa butter in chocolate contains oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated fat which may raise good cholesterol.

Drinking a cup of hot chocolate before meals may actually diminish appetite.

Men who eat chocolate live a year longer than those who don't.

The flavanoids in chocolate may help keep blood vessels elastic.

Chocolate increases antioxidant levels in the blood.

Mexican healers use chocolate to treat bronchitis and insect bites.

The carbohydrates in chocolate raise serotonin levels in the brain, resulting in a sense of well-being.

That's quite a list there, enjoying chocolates and at the same time reaping some great benefits. Great applause to the aztecs and the mayans for discovering such a delicious sweet and a healthy one.

Chocolate 101 - a glance at history

Chocolates are around for quite a long period of time, and they have sweetened every tongue that tasted it. I for one have given the "chocolate" all hails and praises. Now lets get a bit of chocolate background to enlighten us.

Chocolates came from the tree cacao and traces its roots to ancient mesoamerica. From the maya people to the aztecs, they all enjoyed chocolate. Chocolate was also a sign of wealth in early european history when it first took noticed of this sweet thing. Over the years the "chocolate" was revolutionized to be what it is today, nothing but pure sweetness.

Ancient Mayans and aztecs probably processed cacao into chocolate like how we do it today. Whew, they worked even without the machines just to taste the sweetness of chocolate. I guess when colonizers visited the aztecs and mayans, they bought some cocoa out into the rest of the world. Then its fame spread like wildfire, until new innovations were done to mass produce it and the rest was history.

Mayonnaise and Coffee

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24
hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups
of coffee...

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in
front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large
and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then
asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into
the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas
between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was
full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the
jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if
the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes".

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table
and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty
space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, " I want you to
recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the
important things-your God, your family, your children, your health, your
friends, and your favorite passions -- things that if everything else was
lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your
house, and your car.

The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no
room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you
spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room
for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that
are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get
medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18.

There will always be time to clean house and fix the disposal." Take
care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your
priorities.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to
show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room
for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

ICE - In Case of Emergency

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign

The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

THE GREATEST TEST OF TRUE LOVE

The most important, most critical component in successful loving is commitment. Not love.

It's easy to love without commitment. People do it all the time. Easy to love, to give of oneself for a while. But commitment implies bonding in such a way that one promises to keep the fires of love burning indefinitely. It also means shutting one's heart to the possibility of loving another who might even be more attractive, even more lovable. Not easy. This is why solid commitments are not at all as common as we are led to believe. In fact, more often than not, I think that the commitment two lovers make are not equal. What I mean is that the commitment of one might be a whole lot more or a whole lot less than the partner's. We see it all the time. One loves more than the other and is more committed than the other. We have often seen lopsided love relationships where one partner is giving so much more to the relationship than the other.

But writers and poets seem to always indicate that love isn't just a two-way street, but an equal two-way street. That hardly ever happens. It is impossible to determine exactly how much a man loves a woman or how much a woman cares for a man. Love cannot be measured and that can be a huge problem. You can love someone and tell him "I love you" and you're telling the truth. But how much do you love him? Enough to let him court you? Enough to marry him? Enough to die for him? THE GREATEST TEST OF TRUE LOVE is commitment. And the greatest indicator of deep love is deep commitment. I have heard people say all the right words, make all the right moves and pledge undying love, only to walk away weeks or months later. Were they in love? Sure they were. But not enough to allow them to hold strong in their love. Not enough to keep a commitment regardless of the pain.

Lover gets this sinking feeling when there is a sense that one is more committed than the other. When one is giving a lot more than one is receiving. When one's love is a lot more solid than the creaky love of the partner. When a couple believe strongly that their commitment to each other is rock solid, there is a deep sense of security, a feeling that it's OK to give all because the gift of yourself is safe in the hands of the beloved. If, however, there is doubt or, even worse, the conviction that one is engaged in one-way giving, in a one-way commitment that is lopsided, then there is a tendency to pull back and not give as much. And when that happens, love begins to fade.

In the countless counseling sessions I have had with troubled couples over the years, there has always been the problem of a failing commitment on the part of at least one of the partners. Unless there is the raising of the level of commitment, the relationship is doomed. It's finished. Sooner or later the stresses will take their toll and the relationship will begin to fall apart. On the other hand, look carefully at couples who are still very much in love after 20, 25 years. Their commitment to each other cannot be shaken. Neither can their love.

I spent my lunch a little early today at the hospital cafiteria. I had rice, fish gelatin for dessert and a can of Royal Tru Orange. While eating, I was wondering how much calories and nutrients Im currently eating. After eating, I checked out the net for the calories and nutrients present in my lunch meal today. For those who felt like quitting and are afraid to venture in too far..........The ff are excerpts from a story written by a certain Harvey Mackay........

The professor stood before his class of 30 senior molecular biology students, about to pass out the final exam, "I have been privileged to be your instructor this semester, and I know how hard you have all worked to prepare for this test. I also know most of you are off to medical school or grad school next fall," he said to them. "I am well aware of how much pressure you are under to keep your GPAs (Grade Point Average) up, and because I know you are all capable of understanding this material, I am prepared to offer an automatic "B" to anyone who would prefer not to take the final." The relief was audible as a number of students jumped up to thank the professor and departed from class. The professor looked at the handful of students who remained, and he offered again, " Any other takers? This is your last opportunity." One more student decided to go. Seven students remained. The professor closed the door and took attendance. Then he handed out the final exam. There were two sentences typed on the paper:
"CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE JUST RECEIVED AN "A" IN THIS CLASS. KEEP BELIEVING IN YOURSELF."
So, tell me, yuppie...would you have stayed? or would you have played it safe and take the offer of a sure "B" as your final grade? This sets achievers apart from the rest. Achievers take risks. Achievers will always take on the challenge for excellence. And most importantly, achievers are not satisfied with B's.

Ninoy Aquino Day

We are currently celebrating Ninoy Aquino Day at our country. He was hero and martyr for our country during the dictatorship years of President Marcos during the 1980's. He was assassinated on his way back to Manila, which spark the historical EDSA Revolution which over trowed the Marcos Regime. He serves as a guiding light to us Filipinos. Here is a video paying tribute to one of the Philippines great heroes, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino.
